SXOC Rolling Road Day 2012

The SXOC rolling road day comes around every year. Usually its in the early months allowing everyone to see if their cars are running well for the season ahead.

SXOC Rolling Road Day 2012

This event had also been a bad omen to me personally as previously it sparked a series of bad experiences while owning this car. I wanted to head back to the same place and break this omen and also to check that everything was running smoothly.

The chosen destination was Performance HQ (HQ Garage), formerly known as Dastek in Dalgety Bay in Fife.

Arriving early in the day, there were a few cars already waiting. One of them was Paddy’s S13 180sx. I also saw some familiar faces, most of the people that arrived early seemed to be from up north in Aberdeen surprisingly.

People started to slowly trickle in as the morning went on. Wullie gave a quick speech before the event commenced.

The cars were run in a logical order with the S14a’s kicking things off. Stevie-b was the first onto the rollers with his immaculate S14a.

You kind of except the car to be immaculate since Stevie himself is an auto painter. Even his engine bay was immaculate. It made a healthy 236whp and 252lb/ft of torque.

I didnt have long to wait before my turn and I have to admit I was pretty nervous due to what happened last time. On the way down there was also a loud noise on the motorway coming from the engine bay which really scared me. Marc was on hand however and looked over the car and realised it was only the plastic arch lining which was being eaten away by the tyres causing the noise.

My car made a lowly 186whp and 176lb/ft of torque. One of the lowest powered S-body of the day but it was not surprising considering the car was only running an OEM map and standard injectors with 14psi of boost. Russ Paton (The dyno operator) was really helpful. He explained to me where the injectors reach their maximum potential and due to that the car was running lean at the very top end of the rev range. However the rest of the time the car was running rich and very solid. He said if you upgrade the things that are holding the engine back, mainly the injectors you will see more power. Now I know I wasn’t there to chase power figures and I was really relieved that my car was running fine. My plans are now to install the Nismo 555 injectors and Z32 AFM to free up some power.

John in his Herman mapped s14a also popped down, his specification under the bonnet is starting to look quite impressive. I remember the last time him and I were running pretty much the same spec, but now he has upped his game.

He made an impressive 313whp and 324lb/ft of torque. He also stayed till then end of the day to up the boost and put the car back on the road to make 330whp and 337lb/ft of torque.

The S13′s were up next most notably 2BobRockets S13 with a massive turbo strapped on. It made 321whp and 292.5lb/ft.

Also not to mention Kev’s CA19.5DET S13 also made it onto the rollers. It might be looking a bit rough on the outside currently but underneath the engine beats like no other. The car has pretty much ran with no problems for over a year now even after many drift days and displays. Even with its frequent abuse it still produced 303whp and 278lb/ft of torque.

The SXOC has evolved and changed over the years, nowadays it isn’t just an S-body owners club but caters for any car enthusiast. With this evolution the rolling road day had a varied selection of cars. These ranged from Ryan’s JZX110 to a Volkswagen Polo TDI. Martin even brought along his Audi A4 TDI on Bentley wheels.

Ryan pimped up in his 110, as the car was fresh into the country he was interested to see if everything was running fine and also curious as to how much power the 110 is making.

Due to the usual Garage LSD lowering antics, when the car was getting on the rollers it managed to scrape itself off everything. During the run the restraints tying the car down had to be tightened twice so that it wouldn’t move. It made 212whp and 187lb/ft of torque.

There was a break half way through the day, with the resident chef on the BBQ as always.

Performance HQ mainly deals with Subaru Impreza's and Mistibushi Evolutions from what I could see.

However there seemed to be something special in the midst of all the cars, it was a Marcus GT Racer awaiting a Motech digital dash installation.

By the end of the day, everyone was wanting to get away. Most had been there since 9am and by 5pm everyone was tired. Admittedly it was a very good day out to see all the different cars and to find out how the cars were running. I enjoyed it and am looking forward to the next one as upgrades are planned for the car, its always intresting to see the results after the changes.
