Another amazing video by Stephen Brooks. Again amazing footage, editing, lighting and good choice of song. Really well put together.

British Drift Championship at Teeside Autodrome: A Scottish View

Last Sunday, I made my way across to Teeside Autodrome for the second time this year.  Previously I was there for  Drift All Stars.  I only turned up for the Sunday as I was busy on the Saturday. On Saturday there was practise and then qualifying. The top 16 of each class had to be qualified to compete for the next stage. The next stage was tandem drift battles...

After paying to get in, I noticed that the paddocks were all locked down. The pits were not accessible to the general public and you needed a green band in order to get in. They gave me a purple band since I was a spectator. Walking up the hill the familiar sound of engines on the limited and tyres screeching welcomed me back. The smell of tyre smoke and petrol reminded me why I loved this sport. The morning was used as a practise session for all drivers.

As I walked up the spectators hill I was greeted with a huge tyre screech and a massive bump sound. I looked down and saw this:

Cookiemonster (Mark Annette) from Team Redmist managed to not only crash but wedge himself on top of a small tyre wall. Practise was then halted for about 20 odd minutes as people worked to free the car from the tyre wall.

Practise gave spectators a taste of what is to come through the day. People just having fun on track taking their time to work out the best lines and what speed to carry through the corners. The skill level of the day was high to say the least. Lots of drivers could potentially win their class.

As you can tell with the pictures, it was hard to get picture through the tyre smoke.

Being from Scotland, I mainly supported all the Scottish drivers which made an appearance. Flying the flag for Scotland we have David Waterworth (Roacher), Jarack Federico (Jeek) of D-Tune, Adrian Brannan (Ade) and Team Scotdrift (Marcin Mucha, Martin Klowapowski and David Waterworth).

Ade driving his trust Ford Sierra competed in the Semi-Pro class and was doing well. Consistently putting in good runs through practise. A few people I spoke to seemed to think that Ade needed to calm down, which he did hence the consistent runs. With the least powerful car on the grid Ade still managed to qualify 2nd from Saturday.

By the end of this round, he is placed 5th in the Semi-Pro championship. Not bad for first season out in the BDC.

Jeek on the other hand was running in the professional category. His BMW 540i has a different presence when on track than most of the other Japanese cars. There is something about his car that is truly menacing about it. Maybe due to the fact his car looks like an evil old police car. The car sounded amazing as Jeek put the car sideways thanks to his new exhaust. He only had one specification for the exhaust...which was "make it sound like war".

Jeek was placed 10th going into the Top 16 qualifiers but went out on the first round against Jody Fletcher in his S15 fronted S14. Jeek is now placed joint 10th in the championship.

Roacher in his S15 fronted S13 qualified 10th from Saturday. Again he was putting in consistent runs throughout the day during practise. Even leading and ending a drift train during practise for fun.

In the first round he was paired up against a formidable opponent. Christy Carpenter in the 550bhp 1JZ BN Sports S15, who was putting in amazing runs through practise. I even thought he was a bit mad.

Roacher managed to dispatch of Christy and went on to beat Wayne Keeper in his Toyota Soarer in the next round. Roacher is now in the semi-finals and lined up against Team Falken’s Matt Carter. Although Roacher made amazing runs he was squeezed out and was beaten by Matt Carter. He ended up competing for third place against Paul Smith in the Japspeed S15. During the runs Roacher was so close to Paul nearly door to door at times but again Paul was judged to have the better runs. Roacher narrowly missed out on a podium finish.

Of course the competition wasn't all about the Scottish lads. There were many great competitors that made it out and put on an amazing show.

I would like to give a special shout out to Jamie Kenyon (Jamo) though. He hooked me up with a pit pass. He drives an SR20DET'd MX5. He has an issue with his oil pump so didn't compete in the end. Was looking forward to him going sideways too. Thanks again for the hook up and looking forward to seeing you up at Knockhill :D He also works at Touge, so for any sticker needs just get in touch with them.
